Understanding the Problem
Gaia was developed in response to the growing issue of illegal poaching and logging, which continue to have a devastating impact on vulnerable ecosystems. Research highlighted the scale of the problem and the difficulty in monitoring remote environments, where harmful activity often goes undetected. This revealed the need for a reliable, autonomous system capable of identifying threats in real time and alerting authorities quickly.
Design Development & Journey
The project progressed through an iterative process, beginning with research into environmental challenges and existing monitoring solutions. Early concepts explored how technology could be used to detect and communicate threats effectively in remote settings. Through prototyping and refinement, the design evolved to balance durability, functionality, and ease of deployment, ensuring the product could operate independently in harsh outdoor conditions.

Final Solution
The final outcome is Gaia, a compact, solar-powered device designed to monitor and protect natural environments. Using audio recognition technology, it detects sounds associated with illegal activity, such as chainsaws or gunshots, and sends immediate alerts to relevant authorities. Designed for remote use, Gaia combines durability, autonomy, and real-time responsiveness to support conservation efforts and help safeguard endangered ecosystems.
